Sometimes they are genuine calls that could have a positive impact on your life. Fraudsters had to use a complicated system that involved something called an <a href=\"https:\/\/victimsofcrime.org\/docs\/src\/what-is-caller-id-spoofing.pdf?sfvrsn=2\">orange box<\/a>. Nowadays all you need is a sophisticated app like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spoofcard.com\/?SSAID=314743\">Spoofcard<\/a>, and you are good to go.<\/p>\n<p>Spoofing or changing the number that appears on caller ID isn&#8217;t technically illegal, and that is why you find that most people use these apps to prank call their friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/consumers\/guides\/spoofing-and-caller-id\">FCC says that spoof calling is only illegal if<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The spoof caller intends to defraud the called party<\/li>\n<li>The spoof caller intends to cause harm to the called party<\/li>\n<li>The spoof caller intends to obtain anything of value from the called party including sensitive personal information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you simply intend to call your friends and pretend to be their long lost love looking to rekindle things, then you are in the clear. All you have to do is download an app like Spoofcard, input the number you want the called party to see and have some fun with it. It&#8217;s that easy!<\/p>\n<p>What about when it is not all fun and games? What about when you receive fake calls from people that may be trying to steal your personal information? How do you deal with that kind of a situation?<\/p>\n<h1><a id=\"_4yyaba6twx6y\"><\/a><strong>The Different Types of Fake Calls<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>There are quite a number of fake calls out there starting with your &#8220;not-so-funny&#8221; friends to sophisticated scammers looking to carry out a bit of identity theft at your expense.<\/p>\n<p>However, these fakes calls can be classified into two main categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blocked calls:<\/strong> this is when you see don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see a number on caller ID or you receive a call from a restricted number. To place a blocked call, all a caller has to do is dial *67 before inputting your number. Since it is so easy to do, the type of people who often call from blocked numbers includes your friends, scammers, robocallers, or telemarketers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spoofed calls:<\/strong> this happens when a caller uses different types of strategies (mostly a spoofing app) to disguise the number from which they are calling. Typically, the intent of spoofed calls is making you think that it is from a different, more important source. Most people who use this method are scammers looking to get something from you like sensitive data such as your social security number or bank details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With a spoofing app, they can make their number look like that of your bank, child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s school, local police department, or even your doctor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s office. This is all in an attempt to get you to let your guard down so that you freely share the information they need.<\/p>\n<p>Spoofed calls are the most dangerous and sinister type of fake calls, and as such, you should learn how to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips that could help the next time you experience these kinds of phone calls:<\/p>\n<h1><a id=\"_6oalvnkpcqiq\"><\/a><strong>How to Deal with Spoofed or Fake Calls<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>There are several tactics you can employ when it comes to dealing with fake calls:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Never share any sensitive information over the phone<\/strong>. If they say they are from your bank or child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s school, then you should ask for the name of a contact person, hang up, and then call the bank or the school through the numbers you know before sharing any information with them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beat them at their own game.<\/strong> Some fake callers start by asking you &#8220;which number did I call?&#8221; In this case, do not be too quick to give out your number. Throw the question back at them instead, &#8220;which number did you call?&#8221; They will usually try to give you some explanation that does not hold any water, so you should just hang up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not believe anyone<\/strong> who calls you from big tech companies giving you an update on some software issue that will require you to share your email so &#8220;they can send you the updated version.&#8221; These are people who want to send you phishing emails that will take over your computer and private files. Big tech companies will never call you with tech issues. You call them!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use apps to reveal the real number<\/strong> that scam callers are using. Just like some apps allow people to spoof numbers, there are also apps that allow people to unearth the real number being used by callers; choose the best one and use it to keep yourself and your information safe.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Although you could very well get yourself on every &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/articles\/0133-cell-phones-and-do-not-call-registry\">Do Not Call List<\/a>&#8221; available to man, scammers and fraudsters do not abide by any laws set forth by the FCC or any other federal agency. Joining these lists may prove useless to you, at least as far as fake calls are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>The only way to truly protect yourself from fake number calls is to find a trusted third-party unmasking and call blocking app that can help you to immediately identify the real number being used. They can also help you block these people from ever calling you again.
